Killing plant and animal species at an unprecedented pace, our civilisation does not fall short of being pathetic. Populations of many wild animals are either under threat of extinction or they simply cease to exist. The Caspian tiger, Sicilian wolf or Japanese sea lion, to mention but a few, are all gone.
